FIVE boys have been arrested on suspicion of arson after a fire destroyed a school on the eve of the new term.
Twenty fire engines and 125 firefighters tackled the blaze after it broke out yesterday afternoon, devastating the building.
Five local boys aged between 11 and 15 years old have been released on police bail after being held on suspicion of arson.
The cause of the blaze at Leyland St Mary’s Catholic Technology College in Leyland, Lancs, is being investigated but is believed to be suspicious.
The school, built in 1957, had no sprinklers and suffered extensive damage.
About 10 fire engines remained at the scene in the early hours of today to extinguish the last of the flames.
Staff were due to attend the school today for an inset day, while pupils were to return for lessons after the holidays tomorrow.
A school statement said the fire caused devastating damage and asked people to “please pray for the school at this difficult time”.
Lancashire County Councillor Matthew Tomlinson said on Twitter: "As a former pupil of Leyland St Mary's, I'm so sorry to hear of devastating fire. I hope to be a part of the LCC team who rebuilds it."
