NEW jobless figures laid bare Britain’s huge divide yesterday — with some regions STILL stuck in recession.
Official statistics showed a slight fall in the number of unemployed, from 7.8 to 7.7 per cent.
But the total went UP in some areas, as overall almost 2.5million were left looking for work.
Worst-hit is the North East, where 5,000 joined the dole in the three months to July, taking its jobless rate to 10.4 per cent.
Meanwhile, the South East saw its rate fall to 5.8 per cent.
David Buik of City stockbroker Panmure Gordon said: “The nation is clearly divided. If you walked through Barrow-in-Furness or Hartlepool and told them about the recovery, they’d think you came from a different planet.”
The North West and Yorkshire also saw a jobless rise, long-term unemployment remains stubbornly high, with almost a million without work for over a year.
