PARIS, Oct. 31 (Xinhua) -- Roger Federer enjoyed a walkover into last 16 at the 2018 Paris Masters as his second round opponent Milos Raonic from Canada announced the withdrawal due to an elbow injury here on Wednesday.

Raonic triumphed a classic duel against Frenchman Jo-Wilfried Tsonga after two hours and 52 minutes as all three sets were forced into tie-breaks on Tuesday.

"Yesterday, in the long match with Jo, in the middle of second set, I overextended my elbow and it did some kind of pain," explained Raonic.

"Preceding the match, after I spoke with the doctors here, I went and I did an ultrasound and MRI, and they found some kind of a lesion in the tricep. And after that, it presented me with only this option, the risk being too high and the hindrance on my play being too high as well," added the Canadian.

Federer is making his first appearance in the tournament over the past three years. He won the title in 2011. In his last appearance back in 2015, he lost to John Isner in round of 16.

The Swiss will compete for a quarterfinal spot against Fabio Fognini, who also benefited a walkover as his Hungarian opponent Marton Fucsovics withdrew from the competition. Enditem
