HOHHOT, Aug. 3 (Xinhua) -- China has launched its first Mongolian input method with handwriting and speech recognition functions, local authorities said on Saturday.
The input method is expected to enable the Mongolian ethnic group to input Mongolian characters through handwriting or speech recognition, said the key laboratory of Mongolian information processing technology in north China's Inner Mongolia Autonomous Region.
Developed by a team led by Professor Fei Long from the Inner Mongolia University, the input method has functions including Mongolian handwriting recognition, Mongolian speech recognition and Mongolian phrase association.
The Mongolian language with a history of nearly a thousand years is one of the few in the world that use vertical writing, and its informatization has no technical resources for reference or availability at home and abroad.
Therefore, the development of Mongolian language information processing technology has lagged behind for years, and there has been no fully functional Mongolian language input method, according to the laboratory.
"The handwriting and speech recognition functions are still being improved, and the more users use the input method, the faster the functions will improve," Fei Long said.
