LUSAKA, Jan. 2 (Xinhua) -- About 250 families have been displaced from their homes in eastern Zambia's Mambwe district due to flash floods following heavy rains, a government official said on Thursday.

Some houses have collapsed while crop fields have been submerged.

Makebi Zulu, Eastern Province Minister said the floods have also displaced 60 other families in Lumezi district.

The Zambian minister said floods have affected some areas in the province due to heavy rains, state broadcaster, the Zambia National Broadcasting quoted him as saying.

The country's disaster management agency, the Disaster Management and Mitigation Unit (DMMU), has conducted an aerial assessment of the flood situation in the two districts.

DMMU National Coordinator Felix Mang'wato said relief support for the affected families has already been mobilized and will be airlifted to the affected areas because roads have become impassable.

According to the official, the situation was serious and requires concerted efforts from all stakeholders.
