TOKYO, Dec. 27 (Xinhua) -- Tokyo stocks were essentially flat in early trading Wednesday as some investors sold following Wall Street's slide overnight, while others bought on rises in oil prices.

As of 9:15 a.m., the 225-issue Nikkei Stock Average edged up 5.26 points, or 0.02 percent, from Tuesday to 22,897.95.

The broader Topix index of all First Section issues on the Tokyo Stock Exchange, meanwhile, crept 0.84 point, or 0.05 percent higher, at 1,827.85.

Rubber product and food issues comprised those that declined, while oil and coal product and mining led issues that gained in the opening minutes after the morning bell.
