ABUJA, Jan. 2 (Xinhua) -- At least three people have been confirmed killed in a blast in Nigeria's northeastern town of Madagali, local officials said Tuesday.

The blast on Monday followed the planting of a bomb on a busy road in Madagali, one of the frequently attacked towns by suspected Boko Haram fighters in the northern state of Adamawa, according to Othman Abubakar, a police spokesman.

Abubakar said officials were working to get more information about the incident.

Haruna Furo, head of the Adamawa state emergency management agency, told Xinhua that the bodies of three passersby were found on the road after the explosion.

Local residents said the terror group Boko Haram, which has been blamed for the killing of over 20,000 people in Nigeria since 2009, is suspected of being responsible for the bomb blast.
