SARAJEVO, Jan. 4 (Xinhua) -- Former Real Madrid and Barcelona player Robert Prosinecki has been named as the head coach of Bosnia and Herzegovina's (BiH) national team on Thursday.

At the meeting of the Executive Board of the BiH Football Association, Prosinecki has been named a head coach by unanimous decision.

The 48-year-old Croatian is a successor of Mehmed Bazdarevic, who led BiH 2014-17, but was sacked due to failure to qualify for 2018 FIFA World Cup in Russia.

"I feel great because BiH is a great team and has lots of potential and I am more than satisfied to be appointed as a new head coach. I hope we will make good results," Prosinecki told local media.

Prosinecki emphasized that BiH has great motivation to make a good high-quality team which should aim for the Euro 2020.

"I am very motivated for BiH to progress and to make a result, which is the Euro 2020. There are good young players coming to BiH so there is no fear that there will be no good football," he added.

In his rich soccer career, Prosinecki played for Dinamo Zagreb, Real Madrid and FC Barcelona before leading Serbian Red Star to European Cup title in Italy in 1991.

Prosinecki worked as an assistant manager of the Croatia national team in 2006-10. In 2014, he was appointed as the manager of Azerbaijan national team.

Prosinecki faces a difficult task to lift the team's spirit and will have the first exam on Jan. 28 and 31 when BiH plays friendly matches against the United States and Mexico.
