PARIS, Jan. 5 (Xinhua) -- At least three people were killed in France by Storm Eleanor, which swept into the country on Wednesday after battering Britain and Ireland, the French Interior Ministry said Friday.

Another three people were reported missing, namely two senior citizens and a volunteer firefighter who was swept away by a flood while carrying out rescue work, the ministry said.

In addition, the storm has wounded at least 26, with four in critical condition.

In total, 25 French departments remained on orange alert, the second highest warning level on Friday morning due to potential flooding and avalanches caused by the storm. The number was later reduced to 17.

The southwestern and eastern parts of France have warned of a risk of flooding, while parts of the French Alps remain on the alert for avalanches due to heavy snow in recent days.
