Vinci-Andritz to build pumped storage hydroelectric plant in Morocco

RABAT, Jan. 10 (Xinhua) -- Morocco will build a pumped storage hydroelectric plant (PSP) near the southern city of Agadir with 321 million U.S. dollars investment, local media reported on Tuesday.

The North African kingdom has awarded a joint venture of Vinci Construction and Andritz Hydro the contract of building this plant, which is part of the country's plan to develop and integrate renewable energies, the financial daily L'Economiste revealed.

The contract covers construction surveys, civil engineering works, supply of materials and pumping equipment, assembly, testing and commissioning, the same source noted.

The civil engineering works to be carried out by French Vinci Construction include earthworks for two reservoirs, powerhouse excavation and installation of penstock pipe, it pointed out.

The electromechanical equipment, for which Andritz Hydro company is responsible, includes two 175 MW Francis turbines specially developed in the company's laboratory and a high voltage substation.

The 48-month project, will offer some 840 job opportunities, including 780 to be hired locally.
