BANGKOK, Jan. 18 (Xinhua) -- The sixth Thai-Lao friendship bridge across Mekong River is currently going through feasibility study and design process, said a Thai government official on Thursday.

Chalermphol Mangkhang, deputy governor of Ubon Ratchathani province, said the feasibility study and design of the bridge across the river between Ubon Ratchathani province in Thailand and Salavan province in Laos is being carried out by Thailand's Department of Highways.

The bridge is designed to link Na Tan district of the Ubon Ratchathani province, about 606 km northeast of Bangkok, with Lakhonepheng town in the Salavan province.

Due to low density of population in the neighborhood of the designated construction site, the bridge project needs no Environmental Impact Assessment report, according to the deputy provincial governor.

Given the planned friendship bridge, cross-border trade as well as social and cultural affairs between the Thai and Lao provinces will certainly flourish, he said.
