8.2-magnitude quake hits southeast of Alaska, prompting tsunami warning

BEIJING, Jan. 23 (Xinhua) -- An earthquake measuring 8.2 on the Richter scale jolted 278 km southeast of Kodiak, Alaska, at 0931 GMT on Tuesday, the U.S. Geological Survey said.

The epicenter, with a depth of 10 km, was initially determined to be at 55.955 degrees north latitude and 149.227 degrees west longitude.

The quake prompted a tsunami warning for parts of Alaska and

Canada and a tsunami watch for the entire U.S. west coast, the

U.S. Tsunami Warning System said.
