KHARTOUM, Jan. 23 (Xinhua) -- Sudanese Foreign Ministry summoned on Tuesday Libya's Charge d'Affaires in Khartoum over detention of a group of Sudanese citizens in Libya.

"The ministry summoned the Charge d'Affaires in Libya's Embassy in Khartoum Ali Miftah Al-Mahrouq regarding detention of a group of Sudanese citizens inside Libyan territories under harsh conditions, with some of them subjected to brutal treatment," said Sudan's Foreign Ministry in a statement.

It said work is underway to liberate the Sudanese citizens as soon as possible.

The Libyan Charge d'Affaires expressed his country's regret over and apology of what he termed as "shameful matter which does not resemble the values and morals of the Libyan people."

Activists recently posted on social media videos showing Sudanese citizens being tortured in Libya.

The African Union (AU) on Sunday announced that it would investigate the videos.
