MAPUTO, Jan. 23 (Xinhua) -- The son-in-law of the former Mozambican president, Zofimo Muiuane, was sentenced by the Maputo City Court on Tuesday to 24 years in prison for killing his 35-year-old wife Valentina Guebuza in Dec. 2016.

According to the court, the 44-year-old Muiuane was accused of premeditated murder, document forgery, illegal possession of weapons and psychological violence, who confessed the murder of Guebuza during proceedings. The victim was shot four times and succumbed to the wounds on her way to a local health facility.

The court's judge, Flavia Mondlane, upon delivering the sentence said the defendant showed no regret during the proceedings, for which he was sentenced with the maxim jail penalty.

"The defendant will be sentenced to 24 years of maximum prison. The defendant is also sentenced to pay around 800,000 U.S. dollars of compensation to the kin of the victim," the judge added.

The couple had lived together for three years and had a young daughter. The December 2016 incident at the couple's home in one of Maputo's upmarket residential neighborhoods is seen as a typical case of domestic violence.

Guebuza became one of Mozambique's wealthiest women during her father Armando Guebuza's presidency from 2005 to 2016.

She headed a family-owned investment holding company, Focus 21 Management & Development, which has interests in sectors ranging from telecommunications to mining.
