UNITED NATIONS, Feb. 6 (Xinhua) -- UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres on Tuesday announced the appointment of Jamie McGoldrick of Ireland as deputy special coordinator for the Middle East peace process and UN resident coordinator and humanitarian coordinator for the occupied Palestinian territory.

He succeeds Robert Piper of Australia.

McGoldrick, born in 1955, brings extensive experience in humanitarian affairs, international cooperation, economic development and political affairs, said Guterres' press service.

Since 2015, he has served as UN resident coordinator, humanitarian coordinator and United Nations Development Program (UNDP) resident representative for Yemen.

Before that he held the same position in Nepal since 2013, and in Georgia from 2009 to 2013. He was previously a senior manager with the UN Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs.
