BERLIN, Feb. 11 (Xinhua) -- Bayern Munich and Sven Ulreich have agreed on a contract extension, the club confirmed in an official statement on Sunday.

The 29-year-old back-up goalkeeper, who joined Bayern from Stuttgart in 2015, has penned a new three-year deal, which binds him to the German champions until June 2021.

"The past three years have shown that we can always rely on Sven Ulreich. Especially this season, he has played a significant role. We are leading the Bundesliga and still have good chances to progress in the Champions League and German Cup," Bayern's sporting director Hasan Salihamidzic says on the club's official homepage.

Ulreich has made 17 Bundesliga appearances between the posts so far as starting goalkeeper. German international Manuel Neuer has been sidelined since September 2017 with a metatarsal fracture.

"I am very happy that Bayern will continue to rely on me in the future, giving me the trust to reach the club's goals in the next few years. Besides, my family and I feel very happy in Munich," Ulreich said.

The "Bavarians" currently sit atop the Bundesliga standings with an 18-point advantage ahead of their closest rivals Leipzig.
