India, Russia mark 70 years of relations in field of agriculture

NEW DELHI, Feb. 14 (Xinhua) -- India and Russia marked 70 years of bilateral relations in the field of agriculture Wednesday, a government spokesman said.

"As a part of the country-wide year-long celebration of India-Russia diplomatic relations the Ministry of Agriculture and farmers welfare organized two major events - an India-Russia agriculture business summit held yesterday in New Delhi and celebration of 70 years of agricultural relationship is being held in Suratgarh, Rajasthan today," a statement issued by India's Agriculture Ministry said.

The major function is underway at at Center State Farm (CSF) in Suratgarh of Ganganagar district, about 400 km northwest of Jaipur, the capital city of Rajasthan.

Delegations from both Russia and India are attending the function.

"India's minister of state for Agriculture and deputy minister of Russia will inaugurate Russian Machinery Museum, besides and also visit cattle breeding center," the ministry spokesman said.

Officials said CSF was set up in Suratgarh in 1956 with the assistance from Moscow.

Russian scientists helped in laying the foundation of agriculture in the deserts of Thar, which brought about a change in the agriculture farming in nearby areas including fringe area of Punjab, the Agricultural Ministry said.
