GENEVA, Feb. 14 (Xinhua) -- A senior Chinese diplomat on Wednesday said that China will continue to play the role of a responsible major power so as to strengthen cooperation with the United Nations and make greater contributions to building a new type of international relations and a human community of common destiny.
Yu Jianhua, the new Permanent Representative of China to the United Nations Office at Geneva (UNOG), noted that China will always be a full supporter to the multilateralism and the UN when presenting his credentials to Michael Moller, the Director-General of the UNOG..
"Geneva is one of the most important multilateral diplomatic centers in the world and the birthplace of multilateral diplomacy for new China. China has always been an active advocate of multilateralism and a staunch supporter of the cause of the United Nations," he stressed.
"In 2017, President Xi Jinping paid a historic visit to the United Nations headquarters in Geneva and delivered an important speech on building a human community of common destiny, thus sending a strong signal of China's full support to the United Nations and multilateralism ," he said.
While welcoming China's new permanent representative, Moller said that the United Nations attaches great importance to China's position and role.
The important concept put forward by Chinese President Xi Jinping in his address to the United Nations headquarters in Geneva in 2017 still continues to have a significant impact on the related UN and multilateral works, Moller said.
The UN official added that the United Nations is willing to strengthen cooperation with China and push for better cooperation of the international community in dealing with global challenges.
Prior to his appointment to Geneva, Yu had been serving as Vice Minister of Commerce and Deputy China International Trade Representative.
