TUNIS, March 21 (Xinhua) -- The largest national cultural project "City of Culture" opened to public on Wednesday, in celebration of the 62nd Anniversary of its Independence.

Tunisian Minister of Culture Mohamed Zine Elabidine said "City of Culture is a space inviting us to reflect on a new cultural landscape, offering the opportunity for all intellectuals to participate in the enrichment of the national cultural heritage with masterpieces and transcendental."

Mohamed delivered this speech Wednesday at a press conference at the City of Culture.

"Ranked among the largest cultural hubs in the North African region, the City of Culture is a pride for all Tunisians, especially as this monument, unique in its kind, will pay tribute to the Tunisian nation," he said.

After interruptions on many occasions since 2006, this project resumed in 2016, which cost Tunisian government 150 million dinars, about 62.6 million U.S. dollars.

Located in the in the heart of capital city Tunis, the City of Culture is over 9 hectares, including 50,000 square meters of covered space.

It has an opera theater with a capacity of 1,800 people. It also includes the "House of Artists" as well as a national museum of modern and contemporary art, and a film library.
