SRINAGAR, Indian-controlled Kashmir, April (Xinhua) -- At least eight militants were killed Sunday in two separate fierce gunfights with contingents of troops and police in restive Indian-controlled Kashmir, police said.

Seven militants including top commanders were killed in village Draggad of Shopian district, while one militant was killed in village Dialgam of Anantnag district.

Both Shopian and Anantnag districts are located south of Srinagar.

"In Draggad village of Shopian seven militants including their top commanders were killed today," region's Police Chief Shesh Paul Vaid said. "One militant was killed in Dialgam and another one surrendered."

According to police, the third gunfight is underway at village Kachdoora of Shopian.

Unconfirmed reports said three troopers were wounded when fighting with militants at Draggad and Kachdoora of Shopian.

Preliminary reports said the militants belong to region's indigenous militant outfit Hizbul Mujahideen.

Militant groups are engaged in a guerilla war with Indian troops in the region since 1989. The militants often carry out attacks on police and army in the region.
