OTTAWA, April 5 (Xinhua) -- Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau Thursday said the talks to modernize the North American Free Trade Agreement(NAFTA) is making progress.

"We are happy to engage as much as they want, to move forward towards a deal. I believe we are in a moment where we're moving forward in a significant way," Trudeau said to CTV in Quebec City Thursday.

"Hopefully there will be some good news coming, but we know these negotiations there's good moments and there's slower moments, but right now we're having a very productive moment of engaging with the United States and with Mexico," Trudeau said.

Trudeau's upbeat comments are the latest on the chances of signing a renewed deal soon on NAFTA.

Bank of Montreal (BMO) is confident that the talks will result in a positive outcome, BMO Chief Executive Darryl White said Thursday.

The United States, Canada and Mexico have been engaged in talks to renegotiate the trilateral trade agreement for eight months.

Canadian Foreign Minister Chrystia Freeland will hold talks in Washington Friday with U.S. Trade Representative Robert Lighthizer and Mexican Economy Minister Ildefonso Guajardo, according to CTV.

Mexican officials reportedly said that if enough progress is made, the leaders of the three nations could make an announcement at a regional summit in Peru at the end of next week.

U.S. President Donald Trump is pressing for a deal in principle to avoid clashing with Mexican presidential elections on July 1 this year.
