LOS ANGELES, May 13 (Xinhua) -- Disney and Marvel's "Avengers: Infinity War" continued to lead the North American box office for a third weekend in a row with an estimated 61.81 million U.S. dollars, pushing its total in North America to a massive 547.82 million dollars through Sunday.
The superhero film has brought in 281.3 million dollars internationally this weekend for an international cume of 1,059 million dollars and a globe cume of 1,606.8 million dollars through Sunday, according to studio figures collected by comScore.
The film broke 500-million-U.S.-dollar mark in North American theatres in 15 days, the second-fastest ever only behind "Star Wars: The Force Awakens." It also became the biggest superhero release of all-time globally.
Directed by Anthony and Joe Russo, "Avengers: Infinity War" tells the story of the Avengers and Guardians of the Galaxy who attempt to stop Thanos, one of the most powerful, insane and evil of all villains in the Marvel universe, from collecting the Infinity Stones.
"'Avengers: Infinity War' has dominated the marketplace since its release at the end of April, but will begin to see some strong competition as 'Deadpool 2' and 'Solo: A Star Wars Story' land in theaters over the next couple of weeks and power the potential for one of the biggest months of May ever at the box office," movie analyst Paul Dergarabedian at comScore told Xinhua.
Warner Bros.' comedy film "Life of The Party" opened in second place with an estimated 18.5 million dollars. Directed by Ben Falcone and starring Melissa McCarthy, Molly Gordon, Gillian Jacobs and Matt Walsh, the film follows a newly divorced mother who goes back to college to complete her degree, only to end up enrolled in her daughter's classes.
Another newcomer, Universal's thriller film "Breaking in" opened in third place with an estimated 16.5 million dollars. Directed by James McTeigue, the film stars Gabrielle Union as a mother who will stop at nothing to rescue her two children being held hostage by four criminal convicts who broke into her house.
Lionsgate's "Overboard" landed in fourth place with an estimated 10.1 million dollars in its second weekend. The romantic comedy films is a remake of the 1987 film of the same name and tells the story of a spoiled playboy from Mexico's richest family and a working class single mom of three hired to clean his luxury yacht.
Paramount's horror thriller "A Quiet Place" finished fifth with an estimated 6.4 million dollars in its sixth weekend. The film has brought in 169.55 million dollars through Sunday.
