GENEVA, May 15 (Xinhua) -- The UN Human Rights Council decided on Tuesday to hold a special session on Friday to discuss "the deteriorating human rights situation in the occupied Palestinian territory, including East Jerusalem".

In a statement issued Tuesday evening, the UN rights body said the special session was being convened as per an official request submitted by Palestine and the United Arab Emirates on behalf of the Arab Group of States.

Earlier on Tuesday, the Office of the UN High Commissioner for Human Rights condemned the "appalling, deadly violence" in Gaza the day before, during which 58 Palestinians were killed and almost 1,360 demonstrators injured.

UN rights office spokesperson Rupert Colville said at a UN media briefing here that after Israeli security forces fired live ammunition, 155 of the injured were in a "critical condition".

He said six children and a health worker were among those who lost their lives, and 10 journalists suffered injuries from gunshot wounds.

According to the UN human rights office, since March 30 of this year, 112 Palestinians, including 14 children, have lost their lives and thousands have been injured.
