BANJUL, May 21 (Xinhua) -- Efforts are needed to enable migrants in different continents to live a decent life, a representative of the International Organization for Migration (IOM) said here on Monday.

"Fighting for the rights of the migrants to live a decent life and their human rights and freedoms respected is a duty we cannot escape, or delegate," said Fumiko Nagano, chief of the IOM mission in Gambia.

Many people of African decent in different continents currently continue to suffer injustice and other disadvantages, Nagano said at the exhibition of the International Decade for People of African Descent (IDPAD).

"Today, millions of people of African origin, including the recent migrants living in different continents continue to suffer inequality, injustices, poverty, racial profiling and other disadvantages," she said.

"The ongoing migration exemplifies this thinking where the recent Africa migrants to Europe and other parts of the world have joined this category of people of African descent," she added.

She called for concerted efforts to be made to address injustice and dignify the lives of the people of African descent and their future generations.

Established in 1951, IOM is the leading inter-governmental organization in the field of migration that works to help ensure the orderly and humane management of migration, among others.
