Elie Ferzli elected Deputy Speaker of Lebanon's new parliament

BEIRUT, May 23 (Xinhua) -- The Lebanese new parliament elected Elie Ferzli as Deputy Speaker Wednesday in its first session, which also re-elected Nabih Berri as Speaker.

Ferzli got 80 votes against his fellow lawmaker Anis Nassar who got 32 votes.

The parliament convened according to the constitution in a session that has on its agenda only the election of the Speaker, Deputy Speaker and General Secretariat.

Berri was elected as Speaker with 98 votes and is currently starting his 6th consecutive term as Speaker since 1992.

Ferzli who was absent from the last parliament, regained his seat in parliament and elected as Deputy Speaker, a post he held for 9 years from 1996 to 2005.
