LUSAKA, May 24 (Xinhua) -- The head coach of the Zambian national soccer team Wedson Nyirenda has resigned from his position, the country's soccer governing body said on Thursday.

"The Football Association of Zambia wishes to announce the resignation of Mr. Wedson Nyirenda as head coach of the Zambia national team with immediate effect," Ponga Liwewe, the soccer governing body's general secretary, said in a statement.

He said the process to fill the vacancy will begin soon and that the association will conclude the process in the shortest possible time to meet upcoming engagements.

The soccer governing body has since thanked him for his contribution to the national team and for the work he put to his job.

Nyirenda served as national soccer team coach from September 2016 to May 2018.

However, poor results have resulted in a souring relationship with the association, with the former coach challenging the association to fire him when the country failed to win a four-nation tournament held recently.

According to local media, Nyirenda has found a coaching job with South Africa Premier League side Baroka FC.
