U.S. tourist killed by wasps in southwest Uganda

KAMPALA, May 24 (Xinhua) -- A 65-year-old U.S. tourist who had been gorilla trekking in the southwestern Ugandan district of Rubanda on Thursday was killed in an attack by wasps, police said in a statement.

Elly Matte, police spokesperson of Kigezi sub-region in Western Uganda, said Gloria Suemiller, a resident of Oklahoma suddenly died after she was stung by wasps while trekking at Bwindi Impenetrable National Park.

The deceased, along with seven other tourists including her husband, White Gary Lynn, crossed into the East African country from the capital Kigali on Wednesday evening, spending a night at Ruhija sector in Rubanda.

"They this morning decided to go to the park and the victim was the one in front of the others with the park guides," said Matte.

"The wasps just attacked her at once in big numbers as the rest escaped unhurt," he said.
