JERUSALEM, May 29 (Xinhua) -- A fresh barrage of projectiles was fired by Gaza militants towards southern Israel on Tuesday afternoon, without causing injuries, Israel's military said.

"Several launches were identified from the Gaza Strip at Israeli territory," a military statement read, adding that the Iron Dome anti-missile system intercepted the launches.

The launches triggered sirens in the regional councils of Hof Ashkelon and Sha'ar HaNegev, as well as the Ashkelon Industrial Area and the city of Sderot.

Shrapnel of an Iron Dome missile fell in a school in Sderot, causing no injuries or damage, the Sderot municipality said.

The fire came as the Israeli air force was striking Hamas and Islamic Jihad sites in the Gaza Strip, in what the military said was a response to an earlier barrage of 28 mortar shells.

There were no immediate reports of casualties both in Gaza and Israel.

The incidents followed a serious escalation in the area of the fence separating between the besieged Palestinian enclave and Israel over the past months. Israeli forces have killed at least 100 Palestinians in Gaza since weekly demonstrations started on March 30.
