OSLO, June 5 (Xinhua) -- The average price of Norway's fresh salmon reached a record high of 73.73 kroner (8.98 U.S. dollars) per kg in May, the Norwegian Seafood Council said on Tuesday.

The price was 69.76 kroner per kg the same month last year.

"With an average price of 73.73 kroner per kg of fresh whole salmon, we are seeing the highest monthly average price for salmon during May," Asbjorn Warvik Rortveit, director of market insight with the Norwegian Seafood Council, was quoted as saying.

"The reasons for these high prices are a combination of strong demand and a still weak Norwegian kroner in relation to the euro," he said.

Norway exported 81,000 tonnes of salmon worth a total of 6.1 billion kroner in May. Export value of salmon increased by 851 million kroner, or 16 percent, compared with May last year. So far this year, 400,000 tonnes of salmon have been exported, valued at 27 billion kroner.

Poland, France and Denmark were the largest export markets for Norwegian salmon last month.

So far this year, Norway has exported 1.2 million tonnes of seafood worth a value of 40 billion kroner. Export volumes have increased by 12 percent, while the total export value has grown by 1.6 billion kroner, or 4 percent. (1 U.S. dollar=8.14 Norwegian kroner)
