CAIRO, June 7 (Xinhua) -- Arab League (AL) Secretary General Ahmed Aboul-Gheit on Thursday called for effective international efforts to stop escalating Israeli violations against Palestinians.
"The international community should move to put pressure strongly and actively on Israel to stop its daily violations against Palestinians and ensure that those who are committing these crimes will be held accountable," Aboul-Gheit said at his meeting with visiting UN Special Coordinator for the Middle East Peace Process Nikolay Mladenov.
Both diplomats discussed the latest developments related to the Palestinian cause and means to provide needed protection for Palestinians.
Mladenov said the recent killing and injuring of hundreds of Palestinians in the Gaza Strip by Israeli gunfire "have created an inappropriate climate for reviving a political settlement between Palestinians and Israelis."
The ongoing Israeli-Palestinian conflict has continued since the Western-backed creation of Israel by occupying Palestinian territories in 1948.
At least 122 Palestinians have been killed by Israeli fire since March 30, the first day of the ongoing Palestinian "Great March of Return" rally against Israel's crippling blockade since 2007.
The confrontation was aggravated by the U.S. embassy move to the disputed holy city of Jerusalem in May, after President Donald Trump declared Jerusalem as Israel's capital in December 2017.
