BEIJING, June 26 (Xinhua) -- Beijing has dispatched 2,000 new stewards to four subway lines to maintain order and improve service, Tuesday's Beijing Youth Daily reported.

Since June 20, stewards have been placed on cars of lines 5, 6, 10, and the Batong Line.

This is the second large-scale employment of stewards on Beijing's subway system.

Since June 2017, more than 1,100 stewards have been dispatched to lines 1, 2, 4, and the Daxing Line.

The subway stewards are responsible for stopping beggers, buskers, flyer distribution, and any uncivilized behavior by passengers. Such behaviors have long been criticized by the public and are blamed for creating safety hazards.

According to Beijing Subway Co. Ltd, the number of beggars and buskers on lines 1 and 2 has declined since security patrols intensified last year.

The total length of Beijing's subways measured 608 kilometers by the end of 2017.
