CAIRO, June 26 (Xinhua) -- Arab League (AL) Secretary-General Ahmed Aboul-Gheit stressed on Tuesday the pan-Arab organization's support for all efforts to maintain unity and stability in Iraq.

Aboul-Gheit made the remarks during his meeting with Iraqi Vice President Ayad Allawi at the AL headquarters in Cairo.

The AL chief also reiterated rejection of "any foreign intervention in Iraqi domestic affairs," according to a statement issued by AL spokesman Mahmoud Afifi.

Afifi said Aboul-Gheit and Allawi discussed the situation in Iraq following the recent parliamentary election, which is the first since the defeat of the Islamic State later last year.

For his part, the Iraqi vice president expressed keenness on regular consultation with the AL chief "whether on the ongoing developments in Iraq or the Arab scene in general."

Allawi described the AL as "the mother institution for the Arab world that expresses the collective Arab will."

On Monday, Allawi met with Egyptian President Abdel-Fattah al-Sisi in Cairo, where they discussed bilateral relations and other domestic and regional issues of mutual concern.

Iraq held parliamentary election on May 12 amid a low turnout, with allegations of fraud and irregularities, leading to a possible recount of some of the votes.
