MOSCOW, July 4 (Xinhua) -- England striker Jamie Vardy is now a serious injury doubt as England turn their attention to preparing Saturday's World Cup quarterfinal clash against Sweden in Samara.

Vardy played as a second half substitute for Raheem Sterling in the game, but despite being one of the five players expected to take the fifth penalty in Tuesday's decisive shootout, the final penalty was taken by Eric Dier.

It has now been confirmed that Vardy suffered a groin injury in extra time and needed an injection, which means he must be a serious doubt for Saturday's game.

Others who could be struggling for full fitness are midfielder Dele Alli, who was once again holding his troublesome left thigh as he left the pitch, while full back Ashley Young had to be replaced in the closing minutes of the match after suffering cramp.

Meanwhile, 24 million people in the UK tuned in to watch the shootout that ended on Tuesday's game, which was broadcast on the network ITV. That means it has become the most-watched sporting event to be broadcast in Britain since the opening ceremony of the 2012 London Olympic Games.
