CAIRO, July 16 (Xinhua) -- Egyptian President Abdel-Fattah al-Sisi congratulated on Monday his French counterpart Emmanuel Macron on his country's winning of the FIFA World Cup.

In a cable, Sisi praised the performance of the French team throughout the tournament, Egyptian Presidential Spokesman Bassam Rady said in a statement.

It was the second time that France won the FIFA World Cup in the tournament's history, as it defeated Croatia with 4-2 in the final on Saturday.

They won their first World Cup title in 1998 when France hosted the tournament.

Egypt had lost all three group stage games during their first appearance at the world's most prestigious football tournament after a 28-year absence.
