GAZA, July 24 (Xinhua) -- Ismail Haniyeh, head of the political bureau of the Islamic Hamas Movement, met on Tuesday with Nickolay Mladenov, UN special coordinator for the Middle East peace process, to discuss the ways to improve the humanitarian situation in the Gaza Strip.

The meeting also touched upon Israel's newly approved nation-state law, and the repeated storming of Al-Aqsa Mosque in Jerusalem, according to a statement by Haniyeh's office.

Haniyeh called on the UN to intervene immediately to end these dangerous policies.

They reviewed the recent fund cuts and other serious measures against the UN Relief and Works Agency for Palestine Refugees in the Near East, as well as their humanitarian and political impact on the refugee issue.

It is the second meeting between Haniyeh and Mladenov this month.

Over the past few weeks, Israel carried out multiple airstrikes and artillery attacks on the Gaza Strip, killing and injuring dozens of Palestinians, while Palestinian factions fired barrages of rockets into southern Israel.

Meanwhile, at least 146 Palestinians have been killed by Israeli fire since March 30, the first day of the ongoing Palestinian "Great March of Return" rally.

The anti-Israel rally demands the return of Palestinian refugees, who were forced to leave their homes during the Arab-Israeli war in 1948, and the lift of the blockade Israel has imposed on Gaza since 2007.
