DAMASCUS, July 24 (Xinhua) -- The bodies of 16 soldiers, who had been killed in battles against the rebels, were uncovered on Tuesday in the southern province of Daraa, a monitor group reported.

The soldiers were killed in the battles in 2013 in the Sahweh area in the southeastern countryside of Daraa near the Busra al-Sham area, according to the Syrian Observatory for Human Rights.

The mass graves were found after the Syrian army captured over 90 percent of Daraa amid an ongoing military campaign that has dragged on since June 19.

The watchdog group said the Syrian army has unearthed nearly 1,100 bodies of slain soldiers across the country since April.
