Indonesia's Bali to hold international marathon this year

JAKARTA, Aug. 3 (Xinhua) -- An international marathon is set to be held in Bali later this year, the local organizing committee announced on Friday.

The event, which will be known as the Mandiri Badung International Night Run, is planned to be staged in September of this year in Badung district of Bali province, senior member of the committee Istri Ratna Dewi revealed in Bali.

A total of 3,000 runners, of which about 20 percent will be from abroad , are expected to take part in the event, said Dewi.

The other participants would be domestic runners or foreign tourists, she added.

The event will be divided into 4 categories: a 4-km race, a 10-km run, a half-marathon and a marathon, Dewi was quoted as saying.

The head of tourism office in Badung district revealed that the marathon would be held during the night time along a toll road beside the coast line, providing a different atmosphere from other marathons held during the daytime.

Over one million foreign tourits visit Bali Islands every month, according to the Indonesian national statistics bureau.
