SYDNEY, Aug. 23 (Xinhua) -- Sydney FC fans are rejoicing on Thursday, following the announcement that the sky blues have signed Dutch international and English Premier League veteran Siem de Jong on a season-long loan from Ajax of Amsterdam.

The 29-year-old attacking midfielder has won four Eredivisie League titles in the Netherlands and made 22 appearances for Newcastle United.

He has also captained Ajax and featured heavily in the European Champions League.

"Siem is a technically gifted footballer and one I believe can be instrumental in success for us this season," Sydney FC head coach Steve Corica said.

"He scores goals and creates them for others as well."

Although de Jong didn't see a lot of game time during the 2017-18 season at Ajax, the crafty attacker was still able to average a goal every three matches.

According to the Dutchman, he believes Sydney and Amsterdam both have a lot in common when it comes to football.

"They're both leaders in their league with a reputation for silverware and I want to uphold that here," he said.

"I want nothing more than success and I'll help the squad in any way to achieve our goals of winning all of the trophies we compete for this season."

Although the A-League season won't get started until October, the club are still on track in their FFA Cup campaign, dispatching Cairns 2-1 on Tuesday and booking their place in the quarterfinals of the national knock out competition.

"I'm very excited to be representing Sydney FC this season and I'm looking forward to my time in the A-League," de Jong said.
