BERLIN, Aug. 23 (Xinhua) -- Jean-Philippe Gbamin has extended his running contract for another year, Bundesliga side Mainz confirmed in an official statement on Thursday.

The 22-year-old attacking midfielder has extended his current contract, stipulated until June 2022, for another season to stay with Mainz until summer 2023.

"We wanted to point the way with the contract extension and show appreciation to Jean-Philippe Gbamin for seeing his future here in Mainz. He is an important player for us with his physique and footballing skills," Mainz' sporting director Rouven Schroeder said.

Gbamin joined the "Nullfuenfer" from French second division outfit Racing Club de Lens in 2016 to score one goal in 63 competitive appearances since his arrival.

"I have now signed my third contract with Mainz and I am delighted by the trust placed in me by those responsible. I would like to take another step forward in the coming season, personally, but also with the entire team," Gbamin told the club's official homepage.

Mainz host Stuttgart for their Bundesliga season opener on Saturday.
