DOHA, Aug. 27 (Xinhua) -- The government of Qatar has announced that it will establish a new air base called "Tamim Air Base," said state-run Qatar News Agency (QNA) on Monday.

The remarks were made by Ahmed Ibrahim Al-Malki, deputy commander of the Qatari Emiri Air Force, during an interview with "Al Talai" magazine published on Sunday by the Directorate of Moral Guidance in the Ministry of Defense.

The QNA said that to welcome new aircraft and systems that have been introduced to the air force service, Qatar would expand Al Udeid Air Base, the biggest military facility used by the United States in the Gulf, plus developing the Doha Air Base.

The new development would include the French Rafael fighters, U.S. F-15 fighters, Eurofighter Typhoon jets, the latest radar systems and communications, Al-Malki said.

He said there are organizational projects of strategic nature which will be seen at the Emiri Air Force.

Al-Malki also added that in 2018, Emiri Air Force had welcomed the first female batch as pilot candidates.

Qatar has been working extra hard to improve its defense system and readiness, and expand its military relations with many countries massively, especially, after Saudi Arabia, the UAE, Bahrain and Egypt cut ties with Qatar over their support for terrorism and interference in the internal affairs of other countries.

Earlier this year, Qatar announced that it would spend 3.71 billion U.S. dollars to buy 28 military helicopters.

In 2017, Qatar purchased 24 Eurofighter Typhoon jets from London.
