KAMPALA, Sept. 4 (Xinhua) -- Ugandan police has started installing security cameras in the capital Kampala and other major towns in the country in a bid to fight the increase in crime.

Patrick Onyango, deputy police spokesperson, told Xinhua in an interview on Tuesday that a total of 5,552 closed-circuit television (CCTV) cameras will be installed in the first phase, which is expected to be completed in July 2019.

Onyango said the first phase also includes networking all police stations in the country and construction of a national command center.

"We are doing it in phases. We have started the installation in Kampala. The CCTV cameras will help us in detection and prevention of crimes. It will boost our investigation capacity," he said.

"We shall no longer depend much on who has seen the criminals. The cameras will lead and enable us to arrest the right criminals," he added.

Onyango also said cameras will also be installed on highways and will be used to track down traffic offenders.

Chinese company Huawei was contracted to install the cameras.
