NEW YORK, Sept. 4 (Xinhua) -- Argentine big artillery Juan Martin del Potro roared into the U.S. Open semifinals for the third time here on Tuesday, rallying to beat American John Isner 6-7 (5), 6-3, 7-6 (4), 6-2 in the men's singles quarterfinals.

In the 3 hour 31 minute match, third seed Del Potro, the U.S. Open champion in 2009, better managed crucial points and debilitating elements on the sweltering day left the 11th seed Isner frequently bent over at the knees, like a staggered boxer.

Isner, who was playing in his maiden quarterfinal at his home Slam, clinched the first set in a see-saw battle but the 52 unforced errors cost him the rest of the match. It was the first set that Del Potro dropped in the ongoing tournament.

Del Potro will take on either world number one and defending champion Rafael Nadal or Austria's Dominic Thiem in the semifinals.

"To reach the semi-final again here in New York in my favourite tournament is very special to me," said Del Potro after his eighth win over Isner in 12 meetings.

"We fought the whole match and I survived with my serve which was key," added Del Potro.
