UNITED NATIONS, Sept. 5 (Xinhua) -- Britain has requested a Security Council meeting for Thursday on new developments concerning the poisoning of a former Russian spy in southern England in March 2018.

"We have asked for a Security Council meeting so that we can update council members as we have undertaken to do. And we expect that session to be scheduled for tomorrow morning," Karen Pierce, the British ambassador to the United Nations, told reporters on Wednesday.

Britain has charged two Russians in absentia with the attempted murder of Sergei Skripal, a 66-year-old former Russian spy who became a double agent for Britain, with a military-grade nerve agent in Salisbury, England, in March.

Russia has denied any involvement in the poisoning incident.

The Salisbury poisoning triggered a diplomatic war between Russia and the West, resulting in the mutual expulsion of dozens of diplomats.
