BUENOS AIRES, Sept. 23 (Xinhua) -- Gonzalo Martinez and Ignacio Scocco scored in either half of the game as River Plate maintained their unbeaten start to the 2018/19 Superliga Argentina season with a 2-0 win over bitter rivals Boca Juniors on Sunday.

Martinez capitalized on a failed Emmanuel Mas' clearance at Boca's Bombonera stadium by thumping a superb left-footed volley into the top left corner of Agustin Rossi's goal.

The visitors doubled their lead when Scocco lashed an unstoppable first-time effort to past Rossi in a move that began with a through ball from Juan Fernando Quintero.

Boca were close to scoring in stoppage time. First, Carlos Izquierdoz headed against the bar after an Edwin Cardona set piece and then Mas' header was kept out by goalkeeper Franco Armani with a spectacular diving save.

The defeat was Boca's first since a 2-0 loss to Estudiantes on the opening day of the season on August 20.

River climbed to fourth in the 26-team standings, ahead of fifth-placed Boca on goal difference.

In other matches on Sunday, Huracan won 2-0 at Tigre. Argentinos Juniors held hosts San Martin de Tucuman to a goalless draw. Rosario Central drew 1-1 at Gimnasia La Plata and Atletico Tucuman won 3-1 at San Martin de San Juan.
