Uganda names team for inaugural 2018 Commonwealth Half Marathon

KAMPALA, Sept. 25 (Xinhua) -- Uganda Athletics Federation has selected a team of eight runners to take part in the inaugural 2018 Commonwealth Half Marathon Championship slated for October 7 in Cardiff, England.

Juliet Chekwel, who finished fourth in the 5,000m of the 2018 Gold Coast Commonwealth Games in Australia is part of the team, together with experienced Timothy Toriotich.

"The technical team has selected a team of four women and four men to represent Uganda. This Championship will help our athletes to get more international exposure," Dominic Otuchet, the Federation's president told Xinhua on Monday.

Head coach Francis Demayi told Xinhua that the team had been training for the last three weeks and were in good shape.

"Some of the runners took part in the East Africa Community Games in Burundi," added the coach.

The Commonwealth Half Marathon Championship was brought about during the 2018 Commonwealth Games in Australia. The winners will win cash prizes.

Uganda's men's team includes Fred Musobo, Vetalis Kwemois, Felix Chemonges and Timothy Toriotich. The women's team includes Emily Chebet, Doreen Chesang, Juliet Chekwel and Linet Chebet.
