BUENOS AIRES, Oct. 7 (Xinhua) -- Russia's Varvara Ovchinnikova and Ilia Beskrovnyy continued Russia's fine start to the summer Youth Olympics in Buenos Aires by winning gold in the mixed BMX team event on Sunday.

The pair finished the 16-team event ahead of Switzerland's Kevin Schunck and Zoe Claessens, who took silver, and Colombian duo Juan Camilo Ramirez and Gabriela Bolle, who clinched the bronze.

It was one of five gold medals won by Russia on the opening day of competition.

"BMX is made for great action, anything can happen - especially in a final when everyone is going for the top spot," Schunck said. "We had our eye on the gold medal. I think I threw it away on the last corner."

"Being at an Olympic event is so much bigger than anything we've done so far, like the world championships or European championships in BMX. There's an amazing atmosphere in the village... And I can eat some steak now."

The two-time world junior champion Ross Cullen, who carried Britain's flag at Saturday's opening ceremony, finished joint 10th with teammate Elissa Bradford.
