TRIPOLI, Oct. 8 (Xinhua) -- Libya's eastern-based army said on Monday that it has captured Hisham Al-Ashmawi, a senior terrorist suspect wanted by Egyptian authorities.

Al-Ashmawi was captured early Monday in the eastern Libyan city of Derna, Ahmad al-Mismari, spokesman of Libya's eastern-based army, said on Facebook.

"He was wearing an explosive belt, but unable to detonate it," al-Mismari added.

Al-Ashmawi is a member of the Shura Council of the Mujahideen in Derna, a terrorist organization the army expelled from the city in June.

According to Egyptian media, Hisham Al-Ashmawi, a former officer of the Egyptian army, is one of the most dangerous foreign terrorist elements present in Libya.

Al-Ashmawi is accused of attempting to assassinate Egypt's former Interior Minister Mohamed Ibrahim and late Attorney General Hisham Barakat, and attacking Egyptian border security in February 2015 that killed 29 guards.

He and 13 other terrorist suspects were sentenced to death in absentia by West Cairo criminal court for involvement in the arafra massacre on 19 July 2014, which killed 22 Egyptian soldiers.
