BEIRUT, Oct. 12 (Xinhua) -- The United Nations Interim Force in Lebanon (UNIFIL) rescued Friday a missing boat off the coast of Lebanon, said a statement issued by UNIFIL.
According to the statement, UNIFIL was informed that a small boat, allegedly heading towards Cyprus, was missing, prompting the international organization to task its maritime force to locate the missing vessel.
It said UNIFIL naval peacekeepers reached the site, distributed water and food, and provided medical assistance. All the 32 passengers, including 19 men, six women and seven children, were transferred by Lebanese navy to Beirut port on Friday morning, escorted by UNIFIL.
Another statement issued by the National News Agency said that people on the boat were Syrian refugees trying to escape Lebanon to Cyprus.
On Sept. 23, Lebanon's security forces thwarted another smuggling case of Syrian refugees by sea to Cyprus.
