BUENOS AIRES, Oct. 12 (Xinhua) -- The United States girls' 3x3 basketball team advanced to the quarterfinals at the Buenos Aires 2018 Youth Olympics on Friday.

The US, the winners at the last Youth Games in Nanjing four years ago, thrashed Egypt 21-4 before overcoming Ukraine 21-9 to finish top of Group B. Aliyah Boston was the top scorer in both matches with eight points in each.

The results meant that the US joined Hungary as the only teams to so far conclude the preliminary round with an unbeaten record. Argentina, Mexico and Australia can also achieve the feat as they complete their group matches in the coming days.

Ukraine also booked a place in the last eight on Friday with an 18-6 win over Sri Lanka while Venezuela were eliminated following a 16-15 defeat to Egypt.

The performance of the US girls' team here provides a stark contrast to that of the country's boys, who failed to progress to the knockout stage despite their billing as pre-tournament favorites.
