LONDON, Oct. 22 (Xinhua) -- Manchester United coach Jose Mourinho and striker Anthony Martial may not have always seen eye to eye, but Martial could well have helped save Mourinho's job with the two goals he scored as Manchester United came within seconds of beating Chelsea at Stamford Bridge.

In the end Ross Barkley's 96th minute equalizer sparked celebrations and an angry reaction from Mourinho after a member of the Chelsea coaching staff provoked him, but United had showed enough football to hint that they may be over the early season crisis which left Mourinho on the verge of being sacked.

The game at Stamford Bridge was the pick of the weekend's Premier League action and served up all the ingredients for a great game: end-to-end football, different styles of play and, of course, late drama. It also showed that Chelsea may want to spend money on a striker in January if they are to keep pace with Liverpool and Manchester City at the top of the table, as Alvaro Morata produced another ineffective display in attack.

There was an emotional return to the Etihad Stadium for former Manchester City goalkeeper Jose Hart, but England's former No. 1 was powerless to save Burnley from a 5-0 defeat, as Pep Guardiola's side glided into top gear in the second half and assured the win with two goals in three minutes after Sergio Aguero opened the scoring midway through the first half.

Mohamed Salah scored the only goal as Liverpool toiled to a 1-0 win away to Huddersfield Town, who are still without a victory this season.

Neil Warnock's Cardiff battered Fulham into submission with a 4-2 win to claim their first 3-point haul of the campaign and climbed out of the relegation zone, with Fulham dropping into the bottom three.

The visitors' defensive weaknesses were exposed by Cardiff's physical football and Fulham coach Slavisa Jokanovic is the new favorite in the 'sack race'.

Jokanovic's main rival for that unwanted prize is now probably Rafael Benitez as Newcastle United remain anchored to the bottom of the table after losing 1-0 at home to Brighton, whose coach Chris Hughton was himself once sacked by Newcastle owner Mike Ashley because "the club needed to move forward".

Newcastle had over 20 shots in the game, but still failed to score and have just 2 points from 9 games before next weekend's crunch match away to Southampton.

Southampton held neighbors Bournemouth to a 0-0 draw on Saturday while Watford came back to form with a 2-0 away win over Wolves, before Sunday's only game saw late substitutions help Everton beat Crystal Palace, whose coach Roy Hodgson admitted afterwards it was "hard to be a loser again".

Finally, Erik Lamela scored the only goal of the game as Tottenham won 1-0 away against West Ham in the London Stadium, which they had once wanted as their new home. Their fourth consecutive league win lifted Spurs into fourth place and had coach Mauricio Pochettino saying winning the title is the "final step" in his side's development.

How close that step is will be revealed when they entertain Manchester City on October 29th.
